Tour Scotland Website

Hello Sandy, I have just spent a lovely afternoon with your website. Our family left Dundee in April, 1948, we lived at 68 Gardener Street, Lochee, Dundee. My Dad had a coal and kindling business in Lochee Road his name was William (wullie ) Stark. We migrated to Australia and at present I and my husband Peter are living in the top northwest corner of Victoria, in a town called Merbein, grapes and citrus are grown in this area, funny thing is the children next door were here this morning wanting me to speak with a Scottish accent!! Peter and I have 7 children and 23 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren. Even after all these years I still am a Scot at heart. Wish I could make that trip. Thank you for taking the time to provide so much information. Warmest Regards Edith Peterson.

Tour Scotland Tay Railway Bridge South

Tour Scotland Tay Railway Bridge South. A video of the Tay Railway Bridge from the South Signal Box, Wormit, Fife, Scotland. Scottish Diesel passenger train crossing.

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay: re-investgating the Tay Bridge disaster of 1879. Over 125 years ago, barely a year and a half after the original Tay Railway Bridge was built, William McGonnagal composed his poem about the Tay Bridge Disaster, the poem about Britain’s worst-ever civil engineering disaster. Over 80 people lost their lives in the fall of the Tay Bridge, but how did it happen? The accident reports say that high wind and poor construction were to blame, but Peter Lewis, an Open University engineering professor, tells the real story of how the bridge so spectacularly collapsed in December 1879. Tour Scotland South Ayrshire

Tour Scotland South Ayrshire. Sir James Fergusson used to maintain that for anyone lucky enough to live in the Girvan valley the only joy of travel must be the pleasure of coming home. That deep affection, made so plain in the first chapter, written in 1938, was no doubt magnified by five years' absence during the war, and later by his twenty years as Keeper of the Records of Scotland, when he necessarily spent four days and nights of most weeks in Edinburgh. This anthology, mainly culled from Lowland Lairds, The White Hind and The Man Behind Macbeth, brings together those essays which deal more or less directly with the Girvan valley, the parts of it, at any rate, which demanded an historian's attention or awoke his curiosity. It is in no sense a full story of the valley: the principal estates lying on or near the river, like their people, make their appearance simply as the narratives dictate - Trochrague, Penkill, Killochan, Bargany, Dalquharran, Kilkerran, Kirkbride, Blairquhan. Fugitive pieces include an Ayrshire wine-merchant's letter book, which, like the study of the plague in Ayr, deserves its tenuous place in a book about the valley if only because, to all who lived nearby, wine shipped into the port of 'Ayr' was of as critical interest as the pestilence, at a time when whisky was seldom drunk outside the Highlands and smugglers supplied brandy at overwhelmingly competitive prices. Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran 8th Bart, LLD FRSE, 1904-1973, was Keeper of the Records of Scotland 1949-69, Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, a member of the Royal Commission on Historic Manuscripts, a trustee of the Scottish National Galleries, Chairman of the Burns Monument Trust, and others. Tour Scotland Lost Argyll

Tour Scotland Lost Argyll. In Lost Argyll, Marian Pallister looks not only at the lost architectural heritage of Argyll but also at its lost industries, ferries, roads, bridges, and archaeological monuments. Poltalloch House, for example, built in the 1840s as a monument to commerce and investment, lies ruinous, its owners having stripped it of its roof to avoid paying crippling rates; Campbeltown once bristled with distilleries until a cocktail of economic factors left it with only two whilst others have been subsumed into the modern townscape; little remains of even the jetties at Loch Awe and West Loch Tarbert, two of the busiest waterways in times past. This largely rural county has seen its fair share of forts, castles and mansions rise and fall. Some were destroyed in battle; others simply lost the financial battle to remain standing in the face of increasing taxation. Vernacular architecture has also disappeared: the houses of the fishermen and those in agricultural settlements crumbled in the wake of depredations, clearances, afforestation and government demands on landlords to house tenants in fitting conditions.
