Tour Scotland First Footing
Tour Scotland First Footing. Scots mark the arrival of the new year with great passion in an event called Hogmanay. A Scottish custom known as "first footing" dictates that the first person to cross a home's threshold after midnight on New Year's Eve will determine the homeowner's luck for the new year. The ideal visitor bears gifts, preferably some Scotch Whisky, a lump of coal for the fire, black bun or shortbread, and should be a man with dark hair. Why? The answer may date back to the 8th century, when the presumably fair-haired Vikings invaded Scotland, and a visitor with long blonde hair was not a good omen. Although less common these days, friends and family often celebrate first footing by visiting each other's homes shortly after midnight. They share food and drink and exchange good wishes for the year ahead. It is also the custom to sing Auld Lang Syne, the traditional song written by the most famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns.

Tour Scotland Christmas Prayer
Tour Scotland Christmas Prayer.
Christmas Prayer by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Loving Father, help us remember the birth of Jesus,
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and worship of the wise men.
Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clear hearts.
May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children,
and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake.
Amen.
By Robert Louis Stevenson.
