Balmerino Abbey, Fife, Scotland. Balmerino Abbey, a ruined Cistercian monastery situated on the south bank of the River Tay in North Fife. Balmerino Abbey was founded in 1229 by the widowed queen of William the Lyon, then destroyed during the Reformation. A Spanish Chestnut tree here is one of the oldest of its kind in the country.
