Tour Scotland Skipness Castle
Tour Scotland Skipness Castle. Sitting on flat grazing land near the empty shore lands of the Kintyre peninsula, Skipness Castle seems to be in an unusual location. The clue to its existence lies in the fact that its main entrance, once defended by a machiolated gatehouse tower and a portcullis, lies on the seaward side. Skipness was built as a base in the sea wars fought along the shores of western Britain between the Gaelic birlinn and the Norse longship. In the military geography of thirteenth century Scotland, Skipness was vital as it overlooked the confluence of four important waterways; the Firth of Clyde, the Sound of Bute, Loch Fyne and the Kilbrannan Sound between Kintyre and Arran.
Its strategic importance explains the sudden switch in the ownership of Skipness in the early 1260s. A charter of 1261 confirmed Skipness in the hands of Dugald MacSween whose family had spent the previous fourteen years heightening its great curtain wall. The following year however, as King Haakon's vast invasion fleet appeared in Hebridean waters, Skipness was entrusted instead to the Menteiths, kinsmen of the Stewarts. The King of Scots was making sure that Skipness was held, spoiling any secret deals between Clan MacSween and the Norse overlord.
At some point after 1400, Skipness became part of the Macdonald lordship of the western isles. Skipness was again a border fortress but this time it lay on the frontier between the Lordship of the Isles and the kingdom of the Scots. It was one of the Scottish Crown's first targets when James IV set out to crush the Macdonalds in 1493. At first it was held for the Stewarts by their Forrester allies but in
1499 it fell into the clutches of Clan Campbell. These were western magnates with whom the Stewarts could do business and Skipness Castle remained a Campbell house for almost four hundred years.
Campbell ownership was confirmed by charters of 1576 and 1588, and was only threatened once in an unsuccessful siege in 1644 by the Irish guerilla, Alastair Colkitto. A more serous threat to Campbell ownership of Skipness was the execution of the rebel Earl of Argyll in 1685. His opposition to the catholic James VII and II threatened two hundred years of careful acquisition of power by Clan Campbell. King James issued a warrant for 'the razing down of the strength at Skipness' but its canny captain, Walter Campbell, petitioned to save his home from destruction. James' reign proved to be brief and the subsequent monarch, William II and III, was friendlier to the Campbell cause. Skipness remained in their hands until 1867 when the impoverished Campbells of Skipness took the opportunity to sell it.

Tour Balgonie Castle Fife Scotland
Tour Balgonie Castle, Fife, Scotland. The first day of a new tour of Scotland. Took my guests on a visit to this Scotish castle, or more correctly, 15th century Scottish tower house on the south bank of the River Leven one mile to the South East of Markinch in the Kingdom of Fife.
Associated with the Sibbald and Lundy families and once occupied by Rob Roy Macgregor, its most famous owner was the covenanting General Sir Alexander Leslie who fought with Gustavus Adolphus in the Thirty Years War. He bought the estate in 1635 six years before being created 1st Earl of Leven and Lord Balgonie. Restoration of the tower began in the late 1970s.

Tour Scotland Portrait
Hello Sandy, I came across your good and interesting website. I was wondering if you can assist me in a book or portrait search. I am in search of a portrait. This portrait is a fine painting of a Scots woman; I believe it might have been painted anywhere from the 17th Century to the 19th Century, but I beleive it might have been from the 17th or 18th century. I came across this portrait a few years ago while I was thumbing through a book on Scotland. I saw this photo of this painting and it just about floored me: the female subject was a spitting image of my wife ! I should have purchased the book at that time, but I didn't. Since then, I've been keeping my eyes open for that painting or photo. I've searched in book stores looking under Scottish Art History, Scottish History, Scotland, and the like, but nothing so far. I've started looking online as well; I looked at the National Galleries (Scotland), and other such museums, but cannot seem to locate this one portrait.
Can you help me find it?
A description is in order: A portrait, very likely Scottish, of a woman, seemed noble or at least aristocratic. Possibly 17th or 18th century. Woman is somewhat middle aged, not old, melancholy expression. Red hair? (can't remember, but I believe so), slightly pale in complexion. May have a clan pattern/tartan pattern around her shoulders. Not a gorgeous woman, but stoicly elegant, long neck/face, low brow, blue eyed.
The book I saw her in was, I believe, one of Scottish history (with portraits included), or of Scottish Nobles (I don't think it was of Scottish art specifically, though I might be wrong). I happened to see this book at a discount store (Big Lots), in California, USA a few years back, and I hadn't seen it since. I recently saw a book called A History of Scottish Art, by Bill Smith, being sold online, but it doesn't let me explore the pages therein.
I hope you can help me. You might be in a better position to locate it, or have much better resources available to you, since you are in Scotland. Thank you and very much appreciated; hope to hear back !
Cheers, Dino Alvarez, Houston, Texas, USA.
Can anyone help ??

Tour Scotland Brodie Castle
Tour Scotland Brodie Castle. Hi Sandy, Great to see you giving Brodie Castle coverage on your web pages. You will be pleased to know that our visitor numbers are up this year, against the trend of most tourist attractions. As a long term employee of N.T.S. at Brodie perhaps I could draw your attention to one or two things.
Firstly there is no record of the castle having been destroyed by fire in 1645. Records state the castle was attacked then but only that the castle may have sustained some damage and that some of the contents were destroyed. It is thought early charters and family papers were lost then and that crops and outside buildings were damaged.
It was built as a fortified tower house in 1567, although one tower is believed to be earlier. William Burn's additions were not in a fortified style but had Jacobean gables in the original plan, later changed to to Scottish crowstep gables by architect William Wylson around 1838, when William Brodie's marriage to a wealthy heiress allowed the building works already started to be completed. Some of the fortified elements were indeed removed in the 1730's when battlements were taken down.
Your visitors may be interested to know that the Laird's apartment, part of the castle formerly occupied by Ninian, 25th Brodie of Brodie, is available to rent for holidays, as are two cottages on the estate. We also cater for weddings and dinner parties. Hope this gives you a bit more info. Regards, Mhairi Ross.

Tour Scotland Unearthly Sights
In the big church of Beauly, West of Inverness, Scotland, mysterious and unearthly sights and sounds were seen and heard at night, and none who went to watch the churchyard or burial-places within the church ever came back alive. A courageous tailor made light of the matter and laid a wager that he would go any night, and sew a pair of hose in the haunted church. He went and began his task. Read More.

Tour Scotland Skye Ghost
A Lowlander once accepted some Isle of Skye people's dare to spend the night in a haunted house. All alone at midnight, he was disturbed by a beautiful young woman. "Who are you?" he asked. "I am the ghost," she replied. But he did not believe her, and told her there were no such things as ghosts. "That's a pity," said the lady "for I have come to show you where the treasure is hidden."
"Oh well," said he "that's a different story, where is it?"
"And how can I tell you that?" she replied, "If there are no such things as ghosts, how can a ghost show you hidden treasure?"
And she vanished.

Tour Scotland Benjamin Franklin
On the whole, I must say, I think the time we spent there was six weeks of the densest happiness I have ever met with in any part of my life; and the agreeable and instructive society there in such plenty has left so pleasing an impression on my memory, that, did not strong connections draw me elsewhere I believe Scotland would be the country I should choose to spend the remainder of my days in. Tour Scotland The Soul of the Gael
The Highlanders are a grave and intelligent people, of a turn of mind peculiarly inquisitive, and susceptible mind which he naturally acquires from a rambling and excursive mode of life, and the daily opportunities he enjoys of contemplating nature on the most extensive scale. To the same circumstances it would seem we are to attribute that slight dash of melancholy with which the Highland character is uniformly tinged. The melancholy of the Highlander being far more morose, and having no tendency to misanthropy, seems rather to be a habit of mind produced by the combined effects of sensibility, solitude, and the habitual contemplation of sublime scenery. Little employed in cultivating the ground, his mind is not fettered by minute attention to a single spot; the range of his excursions is wide, but it is lonely. In tending his flocks he scales the lofty mountains, and traverses the extensive moor or dusky forest, and has occasion from time to time to contemplate the grandest objects in nature—the war of the elements, the impetuous torrent sweeping everything before it, the thunder of heaven, reverberating, in repeated peals, among the mountains, the violence of the winds, rendered furious, by being pent up in a deep and narrow valley, and snow coiled up in heaps, that interrupts for weeks the intercourse of a whole district. All these circumstances, alike unfavourable to frivolousness of thought, are well calculated to fix down the mind to habits of sober thinking, and to impress it with serious meditation on the vicissitudes of human affairs. Notwithstanding this general character of what may be called pensive susceptibility, which belongs to the Highlander, he is in the highest degree alive to joyous feelings. The Highlanders are fond of music and of dancing, with diversions of all kinds. In ancient times, when the hospitality of the chieftain furnished subsistence to his numerous dependants, it is remembered, in the traditions of the generation last passed, that the recitation of ancient Celtic poetry formed their favourite amusement; thus innocently did they twine the garland around dark Winter's brow. Beriah Botfield (1829).

Tour Scotland Leith Hall
Hello Sandy, I am a visual artist and I am working on an art project based on the history of Leith Hall in Scotland. I am wondering if you could help me. I would like to find out the name and the kind of a dog that belonged to the Colonel Alexander Sebastian Leith-Hay. Unfortunately the web reproductions of his ceremonial portrait with the dog are just not clear enough. I would very much appreciate your response. Sincerely, Maria Petschatnikov.
Can anyone help with this question ?

Dougie MacLean Scotland
Hi Sandy, I agree that Dougie MacLean is a wonderful songwriter and performer of Scottish songs. My people came to NZ from the Isle of Rona, and so I am very interested in my Scottish roots. We visited Scotland in 2006 and as we knew some of his work, we looked him up on google , specifically to see where he was playing. We traveled from Edinburgh to Innerleithen for a music festival where he was guest artist. We were not disappointed. He worked with the audience and had a singing. Later we all went to the pub for a session. Dougie played his fiddle. But what was awesome was that he was so encouraging of other performers. I hear he has been in New Zealand before, but it would be wonderful it he could come to the NZ folk Festival in Wellington. Cheers. Rona Cooper, Levin New Zealand

Tour Scotland Highland Enchantment
Tour Scotland Highland Enchantment. Hello Sandy Stevenson,
It would be really great if you added my novel to your web site. Here is a short description of the novel. "Alyssa Mead's well-ordered life is turned upside down when she inherits a bleak and rambling house on a remote Scottish island. Curious to know why the house was left to her, Alyssa soon becomes dangerously entangled with the local islanders. Increasingly aware of an unseen presence which lurks in the shadows, she finds herself slipping between two worlds. With a growing sense of unease, Alyssa fears a ghost from the past is trying to possess her. To her dismay, she discovers there is a rival claimant to the old house. And what about the enigmatic Rory, where does he fit in? The island holds many secrets for Alyssa to uncover..." Best wishes from Charmian Stewart (Bondi) . Highland Enchantment.

Tour Scotland Robert Burns Epitaph
Tour Scotland Robert Burns Epitaph. Robert Burns died at his own house in Dumfries on 21 July 1796, at the age of 37. He was given a funeral with military honours and buried in a corner of St Michael's Churchyard, Dumfries. In 1815, Burns was reinterred in a specially built mausoleum, paid for out of public subscription, at a cost of around £1500.
Consigned to earth, here rests the lifeless clay,
Which once a vital spark from heaven inspired!
The lamp of genius shone full bright as day,
Then left the world to mourn its light retired.
While beams that splendid orb which lights the sphere,
While mountain streams descend to swell the main,
While changeful seasons mark the rolling years,
Thy fame, O Burns, let Scotia still retain.
