In 1785, Sir Richard Arkwright and a consortium of Perth businessmen built a Mill here by the side of the river Tay and Stanley village was founded to house the workers. By using Arkwright's inventions for carding and spinning cotton, production costs were lowered and the Mill was a very successful concern. In 1979 a Yorkshire businessman bought the Mill and attempted to run it as a going concern but it closed in 1989.
Rescued by Historic Scotland and with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, these beautiful mills are now ready to enter their final major stage of conservation adaptation and by 2007 will spin into life once more with an exciting new interactive visitor and education centre.
