Clan MacQuarrie Tours of Scotland. The Macquarries are members of the clan Alpin. They originally held the island of Ulva, off Mull, and were firstly dependant on the Macdonalds, Lords of the Isles, and then the Macleans of Duart.
In 1773, the 16th chief, Lachlan MacQuarrie, played host to James Boswell and Samuel Johnson during their tour of Scotland.
Due to financial difficulties, Lachlan was eventually forced to sell the island of Ulva in 1778. At this point he was 63, but this didn't stop him from joining the Argyll Highlanders where he became an officer. He then went on to live to the ripe old age of 103.
Lachlan's cousin Major-General Lachlan MacQuarrie, also from Ulva, travelled abroad and became the Governor of New South Wales from 1809 to 1821. During this time, he laid out the city of Sydney.
