Clan Matheson Tours of Scotland. The Matheson clan has traditionally occupied parts of Lochalsh. It appears to begin with Murdoch Buidhe, Constable of Eilean Donan Castle in 1570.
Through Murdoch's sons, the family branched into the Mathesons of Attadale and the Mathesons of Bennetsfield, which is in the Black Isle. Other branches include Matheson of Little Scatwell, Matheson of Lochalsh and Matheson of Shiness.
In the early 1800s, John Matheson of Attadale married Margaret Matheson, the eldest daughter of Matheson of Shiness from Sutherland. They had a son called Alexander, who bought Lochlalsh and who was made a baronet in 1882.
James Sutherland Matheson of Shiness, purchased the Isle of Lewis in 1844, and in 1851 was created a baronet.
